Serger Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Serger ClassesA basic serger class is designed for those who are new to using a serger or want to refresh their knowledge.  Some of the topics we will discuss in class are:

  • Parts of the serger and their functions.
  • Threading a serger, including how to loop the needles, the lower looper, and upper looper.
  • Different types of serger stitches and their uses, such as the three-thread overlock stitch, four-thread overlock stitch and the rolled hem stitch.
  • How to adjust tension and differential feed.
  • Basic serger techniques such as: serging seams, finishing edges, and creating rolled hems.
  • Make sample stitch book of the most common stitches.
  • Troubleshooting common serger problems.

Gain confidence in handling challenging fabrics and techniques with our Intermediate Serger Class.  We focus on these techniques:

  • Tackling curves and corners: Gain the knowledge to navigate curves and corners with ease, minimizing thread bulk and achieving crisp results.
  • Explore techniques like flatlock seams for activewear.
  • Adding lace and ribbon to hems or seams.
  • Rolled hems and creating decorative lettuce edges.
  • Working with different fabrics: The class will dive into using your serger effectively with knits, wovens, and specialty fabrics.

In our Advanced Serger Class we teach you how to elevate your sewing projects with professional-looking finishes and unique details.  Some of the advance techniques we will work on are:

  • Using decorative threads.
  • Seams and hems and when to use tapes.
  • Specialty techniques such as: installing a zipper, piping, quilting and heirloom sewing.
  • Using specialty feet like a lace presser, cording, piping, and gathering presser feet.
  • How to use the coverstitch side for chainstitch, shadow work and other stitches that can be used as decorations (if applicable on your machine).

These are a two hour classes.

All classes include materials unless otherwise indicated.

Intermediate Serger Class and Advanced Serger Class do include a pattern and project component, where students can practice their new skills by sewing a simple item, such as a scarf, camisole or cosmetic bag.

The Basic Serger Class includes a Basic Serger Guide.
