Serger Project Class - Small Zipper Pouch

This is an intermediate serger class that will include some advanced techniques, perfect for learning the great abilities of your serger beyond the basics.  We will make a USB carry case. This is a small zipper pouch that you can use to keep or carry a USB drive as well as other small items.

You should be able to know the basics of your machine, but we will go over some basic items briefly, such as:

• Parts of the serger and their functions.
• Threading a serger, including how to thread the needles, the lower and upper loopers.
• Change the needle position.
• Different types of serger stitches that we are going to use for our project.
• How to adjust tension and cutting width. 

Some of the intermediate techniques that we will cover are:

• The different flatlock seams.
• Using the blind hem or lace presser foot.
• How to adjust the stitches.
• How to add a trim.
• How to add a ribbon.
• Install binding.

 More advanced techniques we will work on are:

• How to install a zipper.
• Using a specialty piping foot.

Your serger should be able to stitch a two thread flatlock or three thread flatlock. Consult with your machine user manual to make sure. 

The class will include a document with the written instructions on how to make the project.  Templates to use for project stitches. The class materials included with the price are the exterior and lining fabric, ribbons, trim, zipper and cotton netting. Note that the materials provided for the project may vary from the ones in the pictures. 

Please bring your serger, the manual and all the accessories that came with the serger like thread caps, additional feet (even the screwdriver and dust cover). Below are the supplies each student should bring, along with some optional items.  

Student should bring:

• Working serger with all the accessories and the user manual.
• Three cones of white serger thread
• Cording or piping foot (this is essential to stitch the zipper)
• Lace applicator foot (optional)
• Double bias binder or bias tape binder (optional)
• 1” (25mm) bias tape maker if using bias tape binder (optional)

Bring your notions, including:

• Serger tweezers
• Scissors/rotary cutter
• Ruler or measuring tape
• Blue wash away marker
• Fabric sealant like Fray Check (optional)
• Bodkin (optional)
• Big eye needle (optional)
• Basting glue (optional)

This is a two and a half hour class that could be extended if needed.
